Campaign recognized nationally

click to enlarge(July 21, 2010) -- Pledges to the Heart of Alabama Combined Federal in 2009 surpassed all expectations and garnered the campaign national recognition from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, which oversees more than 210 campaigns across the country.

Federal civil service, postal and military employees in the River Region and 20 other Central Alabama counties that comprise the Heart of Alabama CFC, contributed a record $1,156,240 in 2009. Forty units on Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base led the effort with more than $750,000 in pledges followed by a record $398,240 from other Federal and Postal participants across the campaign’s 24 Counties. The entire campaign experienced a 17% increase in total dollars raised over 2008 and received OPM’s National Performance Award in a Jun 28th ceremony at the White House Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, DC.

Michael Bell, Assistant District Manager of the Social Security Administration in Tuscaloosa and chairman of the board of the Heart of Alabama CFC, accepted the award along with CFC Director, Lew Lewis on behalf of the campaign’s 105 federal organizations and more than 400 volunteers who raised the record totals. “We didn’t let the economy hinder us,” Bell said. “From the beginning, we knew there was a recession going on, but we refused to participate. We took that message to our donors, and they responded magnificently!” Lewis concurred and said, “This was a team effort across the board from our senior leadership, a host of committed volunteers and federal donors who dug deep and gave generously.”

The CFC is the nation’s largest workplace giving campaign held every fall in federal organizations. Since its inception in 1961, the CFC has raised more than $6 billion, according to OPM. The Heart of Alabama CFC, managed by the River Region United Way since 1981, has transitioned from a small campaign of several hundred thousand dollars per year to more than $1 million in 2009 under the United Way’s leadership.
